이종 금속 접촉 부식 (galvanic corrosion, 갈바닉 부식)



스테인레스 볼트 (+, cathode, 음극) 주위의 아연 도금된 연강 (mild steel, -, anode, 양극) 이 부식된 그림



이종 금속을 서로 접촉시켜 부식환경에 두면 두 금속 사이에 전위차가 발생하여 전자를 교환하여 비교적 빠르게 부식된다.


이종금속접촉부식 또는 전지작용부식이라고도 한다. 전기 화학적 과정이며 접촉면에 인접할수록 부식이 심해지는 특징이 있다.




방지법


두 금속을 서로 전기적으로 절연시킬것 (전기적으로 연결되어 있지 않으면 이종금속접촉 부식은 일어나지 않는다.)


아래 양극표에서 전위차가 가능한 적은 조합이 되게 금속을 배치할 것


전기 도금은 부식에대한 저항성을 높임.


양극의 면적보다 음극의 면적을 작게 할 것.


두 금속보다 전위가 낮은 제3의 금속 (희생양극) 을 부착할 것

아래 표에서 위에 있을 수록 전위가 높은 + (cathode, 음극) 이고 아래에 있을 수록 전위가 낮은 - (anode, 양극) 이다.


이종금속이 접촉해 있을 때는 양극이 부식된다.

* 양극, 음극의 정의?

cathode = 음극 = 환원 반응이 일어나는 곳

이종금속접촉 부식에서는 전위가 높은 곳으로 전자를 받아들여 + 극이 된다.

anode = 양극 = 산화 반응이 일어나는 곳

이종금속접촉 부식에서는 전위가 낮은 곳으로 전자를 받아들여 - 극이 된다.



대표적인 사례 : 자유의 여신상


  

외피는 구리이고 안의 지지 구조물은 철이어서 두 금속 사이에서 발생한다.

1980년도에 정기 점검시에 발견이 되었다. 원래 1880년도 초기 설계에 이를 예상하여 (대단하다) 두 금속 사이에 절연층을 넣었으나 잘 안되서 PTFE로 교체했다고 한다.
